The Known World

Celtic Culture

BRITANNIA
WHERE: Modern England, Scotland and Wales.
ORGANIZATION: Region (homogenous but not united)
FORMAL RULER: -
POLITICS: There are many tribes of varied strength and importance. They feud, trade and ally with each other as circumstances and the whims of their leaders dictate.
DON’T: Discrespect the druids or the tribe you visit.
FIGHTING: Carrying weapons is quite alright and quite common, as is brawling. Serious fights with weapons are discouraged by custom and whatever strong locals are at hand. But if two people agree to a duel, it's a spectator sport.
NOTED DANGERS: Forest banshees, savages

NON-CANONICAL INSPIRATION: The Celtic tribes at the time just before the Roman conquest are fairly well known (although sprinkled with controversies and mysteries as with all research on ancient lands) and form the framework of this area. I’ve added a sprinkling of other legends here and there (Arthurian and other).

Note: the map is somewhat large. This is because most of the places named in the series are close to each other in southern Britannia. It was either a large map with large areas without much to see (yet), or a smaller map of only parts of the island. After some thought I decided that a small, truncated map would've been too misleading.
Eire is included on this map since sizeable parts of it would've been visible anyway.

ALPHABETICAL LIST OF PLACE NAMES USED
Atrebates a Celtic tribe.
Cadbury a town of Dumnonia, fortified against both neighbouring tribes.
Caervaddon (Bath) famous baths and temples.
Calleva the pre-Roman capital of the Atrebates. A major trading town.
Camulodunum the capital of the Catuvellauni.
Cantiaci a Celtic tribe from pre-Roman times, lots of iron mines.
Carlyon City of Lions, the capital of Lyonesse.
Carvetii another Celtic tribe.
Castle of the Pierced Heart: because of the not-so-subtle Arthurian vibes, I put it at Glastonbury. Headquarter of the Knights of the Pierced Heart.
Catuvellauni a Celtic tribe from pre-Roman times. Very rich.
Celtic Amazons: this tribe is slightly less xenophobic than their Greek counterparts but equally martial.
Cirencester the capital of the Dobuni.
Connaught This spiritual tribe is the traditional rival of Ulster.
Coritani another pre-Roman tribe. Peaceful farmers mostly, but there are rumous of dragons.
Cruachan capital of the Connaught realm.
Dobuni a Celtic tribe from pre-Roman times.
Dumnonia a Celtic tribe from pre-Roman times.
Durovernon a castle-city in the middle of a swamp and the capital of the Cantiaci.
Emain Macha the capital of the Ulster tribe.
Forest of the Banshees: since the Castle of the Pierced Heart is said to be there, it had to be here.
Gate to Annwyn mythic entrance to the Underworld. One of several possible locations according to interested scholars.
Iceni pre-Roman tribe. Boadicea was queen here for a while.
Iverni A tribe used to trade with southern people.
Ivernis capital of the Iverni and Eire's principal trading town.
Llanmelin capital of the savage Silures and as such barely more than a village.
Luguvalium capital of the Carvetii.
Lyonesse this mythic kingdom is a staple of all fantasy versions of Britain. The Isles of Scilly are thought by some to have inspired the legends, so that's where I put it.
Meath: a coastal tribe annihilated during a Roman invasion attempt (in season 4 (H:tLJ season 5)).
Mona (Anglesey) a holy island.
Nagnata A fishing town under Connaught rule.
Noviomagus a busy port town.
Parisii a Celtic tribe, fairly civilized farmers.
Petuaria capital of the Parisii.
Ratae the capital of the Coritani.
Selsey another port, competes with Noviomagus as the main trading port on the south coast.
Silures a tribe of fierce hunters, renowned for their ability to stay awake for days.
Tara capital of all Eire once, now down on its luck but still the capital of Meath.
Temple of the One God: placed at the Stonehenge site.
Tintagel the main settlement of the Dumnonia tribe.
Venta the capital of the Iceni.
Wayland's Smithy just what it says: this stone house is the home and workshop of the best smith in Britannia.
Ulster a non-canonical tribe, long-time rival of Connaught.
